Trees and Other Objects

Steve Baker & Mike Dodd

17th June – 5th August 2017

Trees and Other Objects is the first joint exhibition by the Norfolk-based artists Steve Baker and Mike Dodd. Both artists have exhibited internationally, but they share a particular interest in making works in and about the East Anglian landscape, and have each previously made site-specific work in response to Norfolk’s fine medieval heritage.

Central to the Fairhurst Gallery exhibition are two groups of images. Mike Dodd’s wall-sized nine-panel drawing installation Kett’s Oak is a striking graphic reworking of the image of this famous and historically important tree in Hethersett. The works from Steve Baker’s series Like Columns of Tiny Ants are constructed photographs of woodlands and wetlands in various unspecified locations in Norfolk, evoking the teeming life and tangled forms that characterize these landscapes. The exhibition also includes photographic works from Dodd’s residency at Outlandia in Scotland that have been highly praised by the writer Robert Macfarlane, and further works by both artists made in locations within and beyond Norfolk. Trees and Other Objects is accompanied by a full-colour publication.
